Well folks, after four years, two movies, one marriage, a cross country move, a long bout with illness, and lots of touring as part of Iron & Wine, Rosie Thomas returns with her new album, WITH LOVE.

The album will be released Febuary 14th on Sing-A-Long Records, was produced by Dave Bazan and Blake Wescott, and features performances by Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), BroBro Brian Thomas, members of Sufjan Stevens' band, and plenty of other talented musicians/friends.

WITH LOVE focuses on the central theme of love and its transformative powers. The album reflects Thomas’ own experience, finding love and being aided by it as she fought a two-year battle with a thyroid disorder resulting in severe anxiety. “I woke up one morning, and the sun shined in the window, and I didn’t mind,” Rosie says of her recovery; “the birds chirped, and I thought they were singing for me. The world felt like it was back on my side again, or vice versa, and I finally felt like myself again.”

Rosie began work on the record during this period of tremendous change during which she also got married and relocated to New York City from Seattle. Writing in Los Angeles, Nashville and her grandpa’s farm in Kansas, she traveled to Texas to work with Sam Beam in pre-production, and after a false start recording in Nashville, Thomas returned to Seattle to assemble her band and record with producers Bazan and Wescott. 

“The process was so refreshing,” Thomas says of her and Bazan’s approach to recording. “[Dave] challenged me to show more of my personality this time around, and just like Sam he pushed me to ‘belt it out!’ There’s a more playful part of me captured on this record…all around it’s just more fun.”

THE SET UP

What do you get when you look like Holly Hobby, find $12 in Central Park with no ID, no owner, and no way to return it to someone who couldn’t claim it anyway?

You get arrested.

Yep, the NYPD has a dirty lil sting operation called ‘Operation Lucky Bag,’ and they used our tax dollars to trap me in a manufactured (not) crime.  They felt bad when they arrested me, knowing they clearly got “the wrong guy.”  They handcuffed me loose enough to get away, gently threw me in the slammer, and asked if I was available to babysit their children.  They assured me it wouldn’t amount to anything, but still decided to go ahead and push it through the court system anyway.  Cool, thanks guys!!!

BIG DAY IN COURT

The night before my Court appearance I could barely sleep.  I spent hours picking out what I was going to wear for my big day in court the following morning.  I decided on a white dress, hair up, and slip on shoes- I went the “purity” route.  It may have backfired. 

I arrived at the courthouse to a flurry of media attention – though moments later as I went through security with Dominique Strauss-Kahn, I realized it probably wasn’t for me.

After sitting in a courtroom for almost 3 hours, they finally called my name, and by that time I couldn’t wait to face my sentence.  As expected, the great city of New York dismissed the charges BUT (there’s always a twist with me) gave me one day of community service.  I looked at my court appointed attorney and with my teeth clenched  (fists too) uttered the words much like a ventriloquist- “I don’t want to do community service.  I didn’t do anything!”  Then I heard these unforgettable words… “Take the deal.”  And so I did. 

I took the first day I could. 

Next Monday?  Great!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

On Sunday, the night before I was to report for duty, Hurricane Irene up rooted hundreds of trees all over New York City.  Just in time!  I hauled around a hundred tree branches with my other convict friends, and we cleaned up just about every park in Chinatown.  I didn’t get to wear an orange jump suit, but I did pick out a special black and white striped tee in honor of my big day!

HIGHLIGHT OF MY DAY?

The ex con I worked beside, whom the staff referred to as “Chinese lady” (yeah, you heard me.  Their words, not mine.)  “Chinese lady” didn’t speak one word of English, but laughed at just about everything and was such a hard worker I literally found her raking leaves out of trees!  Close to the end of the day, our laughing lady disappeared.  I think she misunderstood the man in charge when he said, “get out of here, get some lunch, and be back in 30 minutes!”  I’m afraid she only understood his hands gesturing to leave the park, because she was never to be seen again.  We were in Chinatown, so hopefully she made it home ok?  

I made friends.  I didn’t give anyone my number, and I didn’t tell anyone what I did out of fear of getting shanked - but I did go home with 1 splinter, 2 blisters, and 3 new dirty words! 

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY NOTHING

This whole experience has taught me a very valuable lesson – Don’t accidentally do something that isn’t actually illegal, while undercover cops are waiting to bust you for not doing anything.

Eventful week last week!  Hanging with a friend in Central Park, and found $12!  Thought, "Hey, it's our lucky day!  Maybe we'll get a slice?"  Nope.

Turns out it was what they call a "sting operation."  Undercover cops literally jumped out of the trees, arrested me, handcuffed me, put me in a cop car, and took me to, what's that word... oh right, the slammer!  

Handled it like a champ.  Didn't even shed a tear.  Joked with the cops while I waited for Ashton Kutcher to come out. ...Then I suddenly remembered it's no longer the 90's, and I'm not actually friends with Ashton Kutcher, when they said "She's so cute, it's gonna be hard go through with this."  The jig was up.

The cops were very nice though - they felt so bad that they cuffed me loose enough to pull my hand out for breaks.  (though I always put my hand back in the cuffs - had I already become institutionalized in my 2 hour stay?!?)

I learned a lot from my time on the inside.  ...And by learned a lot, I mean peed my pants.  You can bet your peed pants, I will never pull a tag off of a mattress again!!

Rest assured, we can all sleep a little better at night knowing the streets are safe from Holly Hobby, and her wet bloomers.

Hiya everybody!

Hope you're well and enjoying the flowers coming into bloom! I spotted some tulips during my walk in Brooklyn the other day and literally jumped for joy!

I've been a busy girl. I've had such a fun time singing with Iron and Wine and spending time with Sam and the band on tour. I will be joining them for one last tour starting next week in my home state of Michigan- you know, the mitten state! There are new pictures in the Photo section from some of these tours and some of my own shows as well, so go ahead and take a peek. 

If you haven't seen "yours truly" in my big screen acting debut in Calvin Marshall with Steve Zahn, there are a lot of places to catch it. You can add it to your Netflix queue, or even watch it on Hulu. I got a kick out of watching it for the first time! My cheeks turned bright red when I saw myself- I was so excited I shouted, "That's me! I'm an actress!!"  It's really a great movie - quite a heart warming story about the pursuit of following your dreams.  I also have a song on the soundtrack for good measure!

MOST exciting of all - I'm working on the finishing touches of my new album this week! My brother Brian is flying in today to help me finish up the last couple of songs. Can't wait for you to hear it!!
